Morzine

Morzine is one of the top resorts in France, within easy access of Geneva, in the one of the world’s most extensive ski areas, the Portes du Soleil. Indeed it is now claimed that the Portes du Soleil is the biggest connected ski area in the world, with just over 650km of pistes to have a go at. Morzine is a large, sprawling mountain town, at around 1000m in height, that’s popular with many winter sports enthusiasts and is a great choice for the traditional one or two week ski holiday and well as for a short break of 3 nights or more. Morzine is a picturesque, old-style Savoyard town with plenty of character and excellent skiing on its doorstep and being part of the Portes du Soleil ski area, an intermediate skier’s heaven, spanning France and Switzerland and includes well-known French resorts like Avoriaz, Les Gets and Châtel and the Swiss resorts of Morgins and Champoussin.

You can beat the crowds and head to the quieter Mont Chæcopy;ry area, where you’ll find some good, harder runs a little closer to home, with this area reachable from the Pleney lift as well as the Crusaz and Nyon lifts, though most of the runs tend not to be very long. The pistes here are covered on the cheaper Morzine/Les Gets “restricted” ski pass, though if you want to ski over the other side, via the Super Morzine lift and ski Avoriaz, Chatel and beyond into Switzerland, you will need the full Portes du Soleil Pass. Crossing over to Avoriaz and beyond, certainly ensures a lot more challenging and longer runs and more off piste options, with some great mountain restaurants at Les Linderets. Over here too, you can certainly enjoy lots of untracked powder runs after a fresh dump of snow. If you want to improve your skiing or are just learning, Morzine has a number of excellent ski schools, such as  Supreme Ski School, PDS, Evolution2 and the British Alpine Ski School, so your skiing can improve leaps and bounds.

Morzine itself is large, with lots of shopping and evening entertainment, so there’s plenty to do off the slopes. Morzine has a lively centre with many bars and an offering of over 100 restaurants, which serve up every type of cuisine, from chataubriand to a curry. The livelier bars are the Dixie Bar, Coyote, Cavern and the Crepuscule, with most of the “activity” being from around the Pleney lift to the Tourist office. Much of the accommodation in Morzine is made up of hotels but several of these offer bed and breakfast giving you the opportunity to sample some of the local restaurants. However Morzine is also awash with both larger self catered and catered chalets, as well as numerous apartments of any size for any budget. The choice is quite immense and more so if you include Les Gets, Chatel and Avoriaz. We have a good portfolio of options we can recommend.
